Toasting 2009

On New Year’s Day, I made Blood Mary’s for the first time in my life. My SF buddies thought they were tasty, especially after a night of heavy food, drinks and more drinks.

I wasn’t a big fan of Blood Marys. I ordered one a few years ago from a restaurant next to the Exploratorium. It wasn’t great and I never ordered another one again.

Inside my friend’s kitchen, I discovered lime juice made a big honky difference in this breakfast cocktail. It offset the pungent flavor of the tomato juice. My favorite Mary mix for this morning included:

  • Smirnoff Vodka
  • Fresh Lime Juice
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Cholula hot sauce
  • Fresh ground pepper
  • Clamato

New Eritrea

My first taste of Ethiopian food was at the Blue Nile in Berkeley. I had so many lovely meals there with friends from Cal and beyond. I was so sad when I heard they were closing it down.

Thanks to my Medill buddy Sara, I discovered my new favorite Bay Area spot for Ethiopian food. New Eritrea is on Irving Street and it’s in her ‘hood. We tried it our after a visit to the De Young Museum in Golden Gate Park.
