Cooking from the Heart

We spent a relaxing Valentine’s Day at home. I loved how our kitchen smelled as I simmered beef chuck and vegetables in our new Dutch oven.

From the pink frosting to the sliced strawberries, I loved the extra-sweet touches my hubby added to his dessert.

I enjoy crafting delicious entrees inspired by foodie TV at home.

Most of all, I love spending this holiday in the kitchen with my two top choices for Valentines: My hubby and Daisy.

In My Belly 2011

It’s been a while since I’ve lived in the Bay Area. 2011 marks my first full year living in the East Bay since I moved away for grad school and a new career in journalism.

Beyond the crime and politics, I had a chance to write food columns for Newark Patch, the first hyperlocal news site in this city.

Tipanan in Newark
Newark is home to a diverse selection of food spots, from steak houses to Filipino restaurants.

I followed my heart back into broadcast news. I scored a wonderful producer gig in one of the best TV news markets in the country, San Francisco. Now, I use my weekends to explore all the yummy spots in the Bay Area. We stumbled on Taco Tuesdays at the Olitas Cantina on the Santa Cruz Wharf: $6 for two tacos and margarita. Yum!

Between Seasons

Waking up to another grey morning in the Bay Area. This weather makes me want to live in sweats, camp out in front of the TV and have a pot simmering on the stove with meat, broth and vegetables.

I dream about sunny days in front of the grill.

My hubby picked up this fancy grilling tray from Sur la Table. We sliced up the portobello mushrooms and red peppers. We added salt, pepper and garlic olive oil to the vegetables. We let everything cook in the metal tray on top of the grill. The vegetables came out tender, with some nice smoky char on the edges.
